The Centreville High School cross country teams are poised for a season of milestones and breakthroughs as they gear up for the upcoming season in the Concorde District. Head Coach Jeffery Fanale is optimistic about the potential of both the boys' and girls' teams, aiming to build on last year's successes and set new records.
Last season, the boys' team finished as district and regional runners-up and secured a commendable 4th place at the state level. With a solid core of top 10 runners returning, including standout seniors Elijah Post and junior Danny McGlynn, the team is targeting their first district title since 1996 and a historic win in the Northern Region. "Elijah and Danny are exceptional athletes," Fanale shared. "Elijah's accomplishments last year were phenomenal, from running the second-fastest 5k in school history to breaking records in the 1600m and 1000m runs. Danny's consistency and strength in the 3200m run and as part of our relay teams have set high expectations for this season."
The girls' team, having finished 4th in the district and 8th in the region for the past two years, is also aiming high. Seniors Madison Sayen and Amy Cheong lead the charge, both of whom have shown remarkable progress in their track events. "Madi and Amy had significant breakthroughs in outdoor track," Fanale noted. "Their performance in the 4x800m relay at the state meet was a testament to their dedication and potential."
While it's early to predict the impact of new freshmen, Coach Fanale has high hopes for a few sophomores and juniors who have shown promise. Sophomore Zacchaeus Post, following a strong freshman year, and juniors Evan Plath and Matt Montgomery, both of whom had impressive outdoor seasons, are expected to make substantial contributions.
However, the journey is not without its challenges. "Keeping everyone healthy is always the biggest hurdle," Fanale admitted. "Distance running is prone to overuse injuries, but with early treatment and discipline, we can manage them effectively."
The coaching philosophy at Centreville is rooted in simplicity and consistency. "Our training is straightforward but not easy," Fanale explained. "We progress mileage logically and safely, combining threshold, VO2, race pace, and hill work. Sprint drills and top speed training are integral to our regimen."
Team unity is another cornerstone of their approach. "The best way our team has grown is through bonding over hard work," Fanale said. "Every athlete, regardless of their level, is expected to give their best. Shared challenges, whether in heat, cold, or rain, create a strong team spirit. Daily team meetings, dinners, fundraisers, and functions keep our athletes connected and motivated."
As the new season unfolds, the Centreville cross country teams are determined to chase their goals with resilience and camaraderie, embodying the spirit of perseverance and teamwork that defines their journey.
