As the Herndon Hornets gear up for another exciting season, Coach William Bachman reflects on the remarkable turnaround that has captivated the community. From a challenging past marked by a 0-27 streak to now, with consecutive playoff appearances, including a heart-stopping three-point loss to Westfield in 2022 and a win over McLean in 2023, the Hornets have rewritten their narrative on the gridiron.
"Last season was monumental for us," Coach Bachman emphasizes. "It marked our first 8-win season since '93, our first playoff victory since '85, and back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2006. It's a testament to the hard work and dedication of our players and coaching staff."
Looking ahead, despite the loss of key players like Thatcher Swinton, Jimmy St. John, Exodus Anderson, Juver Sorto, and Brady Calderwood, Coach Bachman remains optimistic. "We've lost some invaluable experience, but we have young talents ready to step up," he explains. "Players like Johnny Callow, Brayden Humpherys, and Malcolm Levenberry bring leadership and skill to their positions."
Indeed, the Hornets boast a roster rich in talent and experience. Johnny Callow, a seasoned quarterback standing tall at 6'0" and weighing 180 pounds, returns as a two-year starter, poised to lead the offense with precision and grit. Wide receiver and defensive back Brayden Humpherys, known for his versatility and standing at 5'11" and 185 pounds, promises to be a force on both ends of the field.
"We have a tough schedule ahead," Coach Bachman admits. "Games against Langley, South Lakes, McLean, and Yorktown will be crucial tests for us." With stalwarts like Logan Lopez handling kicking duties and defensive stalwarts Alec Beach and Sebastian Kasper anchoring the line, the Hornets are primed for competitive matchups.
"Our offseason has been about grinding and refining our game," Coach Bachman adds. "Every day is about getting better, focusing on the little details that make champions." Those on twitter this summer saw the Big Man competition between the Hornets and Lake Braddock. Definitely a shot in the arm for the Hornets to have the Defending Region Champs come to get better. Definitely shows the respect coming Herndon’s way.
With returning stars like Ethan Buhler, John Costello, Noah Martin, and Thomas Quinn fortifying their positions, and rising talents like David Castillo, Khaleel Gbey Gulay, AJ Johnson, and German Lopez-Ramirez adding depth, the Hornets are set to soar.
The Herndon Hornets are not just a team, but a symbol of resilience and determination. With eyes set on further glory, they aim to build on their recent successes and carve out a legacy on the gridiron that echoes through the halls of Herndon High School.
