Hylton High School Volleyball: Building on Promise and Potential

Writer: novafootballpodcasnovafootballpodcas

Hylton High School's volleyball program is poised to make waves in the Cardinal District under the leadership of head coach Reginé Bumper. Last season marked Coach Bumper's first year at the helm, and the Bulldogs' journey to the semi-district finals, where they faced a tough defeat against Woodbridge High School, laid a strong foundation for what promises to be an exciting future.

Reflecting on last season, Coach Bumper emphasized the importance of patience and the myriad ways a coach can impact a team. "Winning isn't just about the titles or championships; it's about the small victories that build confidence and resilience in our athletes, both on and off the court," she shared. These "little things" are what Coach Bumper believes are the true measures of success.

This belief is evident in her approach to the team's development. Hylton High School volleyball has a wealth of untapped potential, a sentiment echoed by the coaching staff. "Our athletes possess incredible talent; they just need the right environment to thrive," Coach Bumper explained. Alongside her dedicated assistant coaches, Kayla Watts and Rose Mock, Coach Bumper is committed to fostering a culture of hard work, dedication, and resilience.

The off-season saw notable achievements for the Bulldogs. One of the most significant was Alaina Avant, last year's captain, signing with Mary Baldwin University to continue her volleyball career. "It's an honor to support our athletes in their post-high school endeavors, especially when it involves continuing their volleyball journeys," Coach Bumper remarked proudly.

Looking at the upcoming schedule, the team is excited and confident. While every match holds significance, games toward the end of the season will be particularly crucial in determining their district standing. The team is focused on maintaining consistency and building momentum throughout the season.

One of the challenges the Bulldogs face is filling the void left by the departure of four seniors, including Alaina Avant and Shams Samren. Avant's leadership and energy were invaluable assets to the team, while Samren's dedication to improving her defensive skills set a high standard for her teammates. Coach Bumper is determined to fill these gaps by dedicating more time to defensive training and fostering a sense of collective responsibility among the players.

As the season unfolds, several players are poised to make a significant impact on the court. Senior Alex Perot brings dynamic power to the middle, while fellow seniors Neiah Lymas and Sophia Kona deliver forceful play from the outside. Senior setter Nylah Harvey combines speed with exceptional volleyball awareness, adding a strategic edge to the team's play. Junior Kylee Cookson, an outside hitter, is also a player to watch, showcasing her strength and determination.

The Bulldogs are ready to build on last year's successes, tapping into their potential and striving for excellence both individually and as a team. As they set their sights on the district finals and beyond, Hylton High School volleyball is a force to be reckoned with, promising an exhilarating season ahead.
