Lewis Lancers Cross Country Rebuilds with Determination and Team Spirit

With the Lewis Lancers gearing up for the upcoming cross country season, Head Coach Chris Johnston is optimistic about the journey ahead, despite the challenges. "The last few years have been very difficult in the wake of the pandemic," Johnston shares, acknowledging the ongoing rebuilding phase. Despite a smaller roster, the enthusiasm and commitment among the core athletes remain strong.

One of Johnston's primary goals is to once again have a full JV squad, a milestone that has been elusive in recent years. "If we can add some depth and stay healthy, we can definitely be competitive in the National District this season," he states. Throughout the summer, the Lancers have been training diligently as a group, not only developing their fitness but also fostering a strong sense of camaraderie. As the preseason progresses and the school year begins, Johnston is hopeful that more athletes will join the team, adding much-needed depth.

The boys' varsity team looks strong, with almost all members returning from last year, and competition for the top spots is expected to be intense. On the girls' side, Desiree Manso, an all-district performer in the 3200 during both winter and spring track, leads the charge. She is joined by three other talented athletes who excel in the 800, forming a formidable 4x800 team. Johnston is optimistic about their prospects, noting, "We just need some other girls to step up and grab the supporting varsity roles."

The primary challenge facing the team is the small roster size, a reflection of the economic demographics of the school. Unlike schools with large cross country teams, Lewis struggles to gather 20-25 athletes. This necessitates a focus on keeping the existing team members happy, fit, and healthy. To address these challenges, the team has implemented a comprehensive training regimen that began even before the last school year ended. They formed a summer track club that competed in AAU meets and held weekly cross country workouts. Social events have also been a key part of their strategy, promoting team bonding and creating a fun, inclusive environment. "We want everyone looking in from the outside at us to think that being on our team is fun… because it really is! And who wouldn't want to be part of that?" Johnston enthuses.

While it's too early to pinpoint standout newcomers or underclassmen, Johnston is confident that new talent will emerge as the season unfolds. As the Lancers gear up for the season, the blend of returning talent, enthusiastic newcomers, and a supportive team culture sets the stage for a competitive and rewarding year.
