This week, South County High School's dual-threat quarterback and receiver, Tyler Orth, earns the Player of the Week honors for his remarkable all-around performance on the field. Tyler demonstrated his ability to lead the offense, showcasing both his arm strength and athleticism, while guiding his team to a crucial victory.
Tyler’s stats for the week were outstanding: he threw for 288 yards, completing 22 of 29 passes, with one touchdown through the air. He also added 68 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns, contributing to the team's scoring in multiple ways. One of his biggest highlights came in the first quarter with a touchdown pass to Trevion Campbell, which set the tone for the rest of the game.
Reflecting on his performance, Tyler emphasized his focus on moving the ball downfield and putting his team in good scoring positions. "I feel like I contributed to the team’s success by moving the ball downfield and getting into good scoring positions any way possible," Tyler said. A key moment for him came in the second half when he decided to slow the game down, taking it play by play. "I wanted to make every play my best play so we could come out on top," he explained.
Tyler's motivation stems from doubters who underestimate his team's abilities. "People who doubt this team and don’t think we’re that good motivate me the most," Tyler said. "I want to show them that we have what it takes to win big games."
The game wasn't without its challenges. Tyler faced adversity in the first half, turning over the ball three times and struggling to stay focused. However, in the second half, he made a conscious effort to lock in mentally, telling himself to relax and slow the game down. "I reminded myself that I control the game, and that mindset helped us take the lead and win," he reflected. Tyler’s approach to handling pressure is simple but effective: "I tell myself to relax, breathe, and remember that pressure makes diamonds."
Looking ahead, Tyler’s goals for the rest of the season are to be the best quarterback and teammate he can be. "Playing quarterback is tough, but I know I can do it at a high level," he shared. In addition to football, Tyler hopes to play either football or baseball at the collegiate level.
Off the field, Tyler enjoys hanging out with friends, watching Netflix, and sticking to his pre-game ritual of using recovery boots before every game to ensure his legs feel fresh. His gratitude for his teammates and coaches is clear: "I want to thank my O-line and receivers for believing in me and helping me out, and I’m especially grateful to my coaches for putting me in positions to succeed."
Congratulations to Tyler Orth for earning Player of the Week honors! His resilience, versatility, and leadership continue to push South County High School to new heights.
