The Patriot Pioneers are gearing up to build on their storied legacy of success. Coach Sean Finnerty, entering his sixth season with the team, reflects on their journey thus far and looks ahead with optimism and determination.
"Last year, we faced a steep learning curve with a very young team," Coach Finnerty recalls. "Most of our starters were stepping onto Friday night lights for the first time, and we navigated one of the toughest schedules in our area."
Their season started with a challenging matchup against Westfield, setting the tone for a series of hard-fought battles. "Despite starting with a tough loss, we rallied to a 6-3 record in the regular season," Coach Finnerty explains. "Those three losses were heartbreakers, each decided by a narrow margin in the final quarter."
Looking forward, Coach Finnerty emphasizes the strides made during the offseason. "Our quarterback, Tyler Knutson, and the offensive line have made significant gains in the weight room," he shares. "They're poised for standout performances this year."
When asked about the upcoming schedule, Coach Finnerty acknowledges the challenges ahead. "Once again, we're facing one of the toughest schedules in our area," he remarks. "Games against powerhouse teams like Westfield, Colonial Forge, and Battlefield will be pivotal."
Reflecting on departures from last season, Coach identifies key losses such as MLB Darian Whitaker and senior offensive linemen Bryan Rudd and Alaric Ahrens. "Their absence leaves big shoes to fill," he admits. "However, we have several players who gained valuable experience last year and are ready to step up."
As for players to watch this season, Coach Finnerty highlights a formidable lineup. "Keep an eye on Tyler Knutson at quarterback, standing tall at 6 '4" and 200 lbs," he advises. "Running back Jackson McCarter brings power and agility at 6'0" and 200 lbs, while Diasian Noakes adds height and speed as a wide receiver at 6'2" and 170 lbs."
On the defensive front, Tyler Johnson at defensive end, Chris Umana at defensive tackle, Matthieu Kanu at inside linebacker, and Leo Sribar at strong safety promise to anchor a robust defense.
In closing, Coach Finnerty underscores the Pioneers' consistency in playoff appearances, noting their impressive streak of eight consecutive playoff berths. With renewed strength and determination, Patriot High School football is poised to make its mark once again this season.
