Arlington, VA – After a long drive from Virginia Beach and two games in two days plus two overtime periods versus Yorktown, the Cox Falcons, owners of 24 VHSL state championships, finished the trip north with a 2-1 win over the Patriots.
In a unique regular season battle of Virginia state field hockey powers located 200 miles apart, Yorktown grabbed an early lead with a breakaway goal scored by senior Quincy Green pushing past two Cox defenders and firing a shot in the net only 2:45 seconds into the game.
After the taking the 1-0 lead, the Patriots continued to push forward into the offensive zone in the first quarter and held possession creating some additional scoring opportunities.
However, the Falcons found their energy in the 2nd quarter and pushed back including setting up three penalty corners. Yorktown junior goalie Sarah Kinzer kept the score sheet clean with numerous saves in the quarter, and veteran all state defender, senior Laney Reiser, controlled the defensive zone quashing seemingly promising offensive chances.
In a seesaw game the third quarter looked like the first quarter as Yorktown had multiple looks to add to the lead but was unable to convert despite having three penalty corners. A host of Falcon defenders fought off the Patriots.

The Falcons rebounded in the 4th quarter that started to see their offense come alive, and at 10:56 of the quarter Cox converted on a penalty corner with Junior Atalee Booth getting the equalizing goal assisted by freshman Mikaela Quinn and senior MacKenzie Derr making the score 1-1.
Cox continued the pressure with four penalty corners in the 4th quarter, and while they were unable to take the lead or get the game winner, they had momentum that carried into overtime.

In the first 10-minute overtime period the Falcons secured five corners and forced Yorktown to scramble to clear the defensive zone. The Patriots were up to the task with clear after clear. However, in the second 10-minute overtime the Falcons got the winning goal during another penalty corner with freshman Bella Glenn tipping in MacKenzie Derr’s shot at 8:14 of the period for the 2-1 win.

As for creating this opportunity for a Virginia Beach school to face teams in the Northern Virginia area, Cox Coach Taylor Rountree shared, “I emailed them [Woodson and Yorktown coaches] in the spring to see if we could set up games, as sometimes it is nice to get out of our area and venture someplace different.”
As for the result, Coach Roundtree added, “It was a battle. We have seven freshmen on our team and one of the freshmen actually scored in overtime [Glenn].”
