Under the guidance of Coach Josh Shapiro, the team is coming off a remarkable year that saw them clinch the Liberty Conference title and set multiple school records. With nine wins, the most since 1975, and an explosive offense that shattered records for total points, passing touchdowns, receiving touchdowns, and even the longest field goal at 51 yards, the Generals have set a high bar for themselves.
However, the season ended on a somber note with a first-round playoff exit at the hands of Westfield. Reflecting on the season, Coach Shapiro acknowledges the team's success but stresses the need for improvement. "What we learned from the season is if we want to do more, we need to be better," Shapiro remarked, highlighting the competitive spirit that drives the team.
This offseason has been marked by consistent effort and dedication. The players have been regulars in the weight room and have excelled in various other varsity sports, including track and field, basketball, wrestling, baseball, and lacrosse. Coach Shapiro, emphasizing the team's homegrown talent, proudly states, "We do not recruit. My staff and I coach who enters through the main doors of our building who live in the boundaries of our school’s district."
The upcoming schedule is one that Coach Shapiro views with optimism. "I like our schedule. I also think that no one game is more important than any other," he says. The Liberty District is known for its unpredictability, with any team capable of toppling another on any given Friday. The Generals' county games, in particular, are significant rivalries, steeped in history and community involvement, with players often having long standing relationships with their opponents.
Replacing key players from last season is always a challenge. The Generals have lost impactful talents such as quarterback Jon Bhojwani, three starting offensive linemen, standout receivers, and several defensive stalwarts. Yet, Coach Shapiro is focused on developing the next generation. "You can’t replace impactful players, you just coach the guys you have and hope the legacy that was left before them showed them how to do things the right way," he reflects.
The team boasts a promising roster ready to step up and make their mark. Players like senior receiver and defensive back Michel Barber, senior defensive lineman Ben Hughes, and senior receiver Jon Malatesta are expected to be key contributors. The versatility of Sean Guffey, who plays linebacker, receiver, and running back, along with senior linebacker and tight end Ian Crowley, adds depth to the squad. Safety Zach Meehan and strong safety Brian Baptiste are set to fortify the defense, while junior offensive linemen Grant Seibert and Chris Ferrufino will be pivotal in protecting the quarterback and opening up the running game.
With a mix of experienced seniors and emerging juniors, Coach Shapiro’s team is poised to build on last year's successes and strive for even greater heights.
