With the new football season on the horizon, Westfield High School is preparing for a significant transition. Scott Vossler is stepping in as head coach, taking over from Coach Kyle Simmons, who led the team for 14 successful years. While filling Simmons' shoes is a challenging task, Vossler's fresh perspective and strong leadership are expected to continue the program's legacy of excellence."For the first time in 25 years, I did not coach or play football last season. Watching other teams was relaxing, but I missed being part of it," Vossler shared.
As a newcomer to Westfield, Vossler has been impressed by the support the program receives. "The administrative and community support here is incredible," he said. "The players have a tremendous work ethic, and the football culture is strong. Our goal is to make our alumni proud."
Significant offseason developments included retaining several staff members and integrating new coaches. "Both players and coaches are working on learning new systems and getting comfortable with one another," Vossler explained.
The upcoming schedule poses challenges. "The Concorde District is always tough," Vossler acknowledged. "Madison, Centreville, and South Lakes are strong. Our non-conference opener against Patriot HS, followed by games against Mt. Vernon and defending region champion Lake Braddock, will be challenging."
Westfield faces the challenge of replacing key players. "We lost our QB, top WR, and several defensive linemen," Vossler noted. "But we have young players ready to step up."
Key players to watch include RB Kennedy Duda (5'10", 175 lbs, senior), WR/DB Conor Morin (5'10", 165 lbs, senior), QB/WR Huda Johnson (5'10", 165 lbs, senior), LB Troy Lucas (6'0", 215 lbs, senior), DB Jay Rennyson (6'0", 170 lbs, senior), and DB Elijah Coffield (5'10", 170 lbs, senior). The team also returns three starting offensive linemen.
With renewed energy and commitment, Coach Vossler and his team are ready for the season. The community's support and the players' dedication signal a promising year for the Westfield Bulldogs.
